Special message from pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii
August 27, 2024 01:22
After a highly successful 2017 tour, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, with pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, will be making their long-awaited return to Japan. We received a message from Mr. Tsujii ahead of their Hamamatsu performance.
Q: You also performed with the London Philharmonic in 2017. What did you think of the orchestra? Also, what kind of conductor is Robin Ticciati?
During our last tour with the London Philharmonic, we performed Rachmaninoff's Concerto in Hamamatsu.
I remember being moved by the wonderful performance under the direction of Mr. Jurowski. I'm also looking forward to the Eroica Symphony. I previously performed with Mr. Ticciati at a music festival that he led, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of performance we'll have again.
Q: At the Hamamatsu concert, you will be performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 "Emperor." What does this piece mean to you, Mr. Tsujii?
It is said that the name "Emperor" was given to the piece by later generations, but I think it is a good fit. The large-scale, gorgeous first movement and the gorgeous third movement are characteristic of Beethoven. I also love the delicate, gentle, and beautiful second movement, and I am moved when I play it.
Q: Is there anything you would like to try in the future?
This time I will be performing Beethoven's concertos, and I have great respect for him for leaving behind such wonderful works even though he lost his hearing in his later years. For my first recording with Deutsche Grammophon, I will be working on Piano Sonata No. 29 "Hammerklavier," but I would also like to attempt a concert of all of his piano sonatas in the future.
Q: Do you have an ideal image of yourself as a pianist?
I think I have an ideal situation, and I would be very happy if the people who listen to my music are pleased, so I would like to perform to my best ability.
Q: Please give a message to the customers coming to the Hamamatsu performance.
Hamamatsu City has the impression of being a "town of music". This time, I will be playing the Yamaha CFX piano. It's a wonderful piano, so please pay attention to the piano. I'm looking forward to seeing you all at the venue. I'm waiting for you!
