2016年夏、辻井伸行はアメリカ・ニューヨークを訪れた。ニューヨーク・マンハッタンの中心に位置する「セントラルパーク」で開かれる夏のイベントに招待されたのだ。このイベントは、エンタテインメントをより身近なものとするため、毎年夏に開催され、ミュージカル・コメディー・コンサートなど、ほとんどを無料で鑑賞することができる。ニューヨークの夏の風物詩であり、街をあげての一大イベントだ。
2016 summer, Nobuyuki Tsujii visited New York, USA. He was invited to a summer event held in "Central Park" located in the heart of Manhattan, New York. This event is held every year in the summer to bring entertainment such as musicals, comedies and concerts to the community; and is free to the public. It is a summer tradition of New York and a major event of the city.
野外でのフリー・コンサートは、辻井にとって初めての試み。さらにニューヨークは、辻井にとって特別な場所だという。12歳の時、「カーネギーホール」の小ホールで演奏した辻井は、いつか大ホールでの演奏を夢見ていた。それから夢を実現させるため、努力に努力を重ね、17歳史上最年少でショパンコンクールに挑戦、2009年ヴァン・クライバーン国際ピアノコンクールで日本人初優勝。2011年には念願の大ホールでＮＹデビューリサイタルを果たす。“世界の辻井”へと成長を遂げる原点となった場所でもあるのだ。
This was Mr. Tsujii's first ever outdoor concert. In addition, New York is a special place for Tsujii. At the age of 12, he played in the small hall of the "Carnegie Hall" and dreamed of playing in the large hall one day. To realize his dream, he repeated effort after effort, becoming the youngest contestant at the Chopin Competition at the age of 17, and the first Japanese to win the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009. In 2011, he fulfilled his desire, playing his New York debut recital in the great hall. This place was a starting point for him to achieve growth to become the "Tsujii of the World."
今回、このステージで共演するのは「オルフェウス室内管弦楽団」。この楽団は、通常いる指揮者の指示がなく、それぞれが意見を出し合い、作り上げるという独創的な演奏スタイルをもつ。その革新性と高い芸術性は他の追随を許さない世界トップレベルのオーケストラ。実は辻井とは2年ぶりのタッグである。ここで演奏するのは、ベートーベンの「ピアノ協奏曲第5番：皇帝」。ベートーベンは王家の間で親しまれたクラシックを民衆に広めることに努めたという。
This time, he appeared on stage with the "Orpheus Chamber Orchestra," an orchestra without a conductor. Its innovation and high artistic quality is unrivaled among the world's top-level orchestras. This was Tsujii's reunion with the band after two years. They were here to play Beethoven's "Piano Concerto No. 5: the Emperor." Beethoven's music spread the love of classical music from the royal family to the public.
このコンサートには、エンタテインメントを求めて多くの人が集う。もちろん、クラシックを知らない人たちもいるのだ。辻井は、「クラシックを知ってもらうきっかけになれば」という思いを胸にしながら演奏に臨む。目の肥えたニューヨーカーを前にどんな音色を響かせるのだろうか？
セントラルパークに、辻井の演奏が響き、訪れた観客の心を魅了いく。
Many in the audience of this concert came in search of entertainment, naturally including some people who do not know much about classical music. Tsujii hoped to provide an opportunity for them to get to know classical music. How might the music appeal to the discerning NewYorkers? In Central Park, the sound of Tsujii's playing captivated the hearts of the spectators.
また、今回のニューヨークの旅は辻井伸行にとって刺激に満ち溢れていた・・・。
アメリカの音楽文化に触れるため、辻井は様々な体験をする。学生たちとの交友、本場ジャズクラブでの飛び入り演奏・・・、そして、まさに必見なのは、世界を舞台に活躍する一流タップダンサーとの即興共演、魂の音と音を感じ合いぶつけあう２人が織りなす音楽の迫力は、他では絶対に観られない圧巻のシーンであった。エンターテイメントが根付くこの街で大きな刺激となる出会いに、きっと辻井伸行は“音楽の持つチカラと可能性”を改めて実感したにちがいない。そして最後に、このシリーズならではのシーンを少しだけお知らせすると・・・、辻井伸行は人生で初めて宙を舞ったのだ！

In this city packed with entertainment stimuli, Nobuyuki Tsujii once again realized "the power and possibilities of music." And, finally, in a scene that is unique to this series [of Fuji-TV Nobu documentaries] ... Nobuyuki Tsujii floated in a dance for the first time in his life!

It may just be a coincidence, but soon after I retweeted this to @FujiTV the announcement of the documentary showed up!
By the way, the photo that came with Shinobu's tweet, shown above, shows Nobu being taken for a boat ride in Minnesota, with a TV camera man at the bow of the boat. Sadly, it seems the Minnesota footage is not part of this documentary, but we may yet see it in another show.
