The December issue of Japan's
(Friends of Music) magazine has a report on 辻井伸行 inオーストラリア Nobuyuki Tsujii in Australia.
A big thanks to Nobu fan Yuko in Japan, who looked up the magazine in her library and shared the text of the report with us.   Please read on.

Nobuyuki Tsujii in Australia.

Tsujii received a great cheer from the full-house audience every day and garnered high praises posted on the local papers.

Tsujii, after finishing the rehearsal, says, "There is reverberation in large proportion; and it's easy to play here because there is no habit." [Meaning he has never played in the Opera House before and so has not formed any bad habit???  The online translator failed me on that last sentence.]  Ashkenazy served as the chief conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for four years starting in 2009, and he has thorough communication with the orchestra.  During the concerto, Ashkenazy occasionally listened to the [solo] performance of Tsujii and often turned back to conduct the orchestra with a widespread smile on his face, as if saying "Did you hear that?”

Tsujii was making his debut here, and the regular concert-goers might have thought of him as a typical newcomer instead of a star. However, Sydney's audience -- who cough and sneeze without hesitation (based on my conversation with the recording engineer in the hall) -- was listening breathlessly to Tsujii's performance on this day. At the finish of the brilliant coda of the final movement that turns to C major, big cheers and applause rose from the packed audience, and members of the orchestra also sent smiles, applause and cheers to Tsujii.

About the performance of the first day, the "Australian" paper wrote " exquisite sharpness and flexibility""the highest level of classical concert pianists.""One of the most heartfelt experiences of life "
"Sydney Morning Herald"commented on the second day's performance under the heading "Sublime""Beethoven's nuances, accent, dynamics, vitality, clarity and musical purposecan all be heard.  Extra things, a revelation, piano technique without showiness, music itself".
