UPDATE: I have been informed that the footage is actually a reenactment.  Mr. Cliburn and Nobu were played by actors in the scene.  ^_^  A good job nevertheless!

On March 6, 2017, there was a TV show entitled  《成功の遺伝子 日本が世界に誇る30人》 "30 people that Japan may boast to the world" aired on Nippon TV in Japan.   The broadcast was mentioned on The Nobuyuki Tsujii Official Site and so we knew that Nobu was among one of the 30 people.

The advance information on the show didn't sound too promising, so I paid little attention to it. However, Yura watched the broadcast and shared a couple of tweets with short clips from the show. I was traveling last weekend and only glanced at the clips quickly. It wasn't until today that I looked at them carefully and realized that one of them has some rare footage that I never saw before.

I took the liberty of making a video of the clip, shown below:

In the footage, Nobu is shown paying a visit to the Texas home of Mr. Van Cliburn in year 2013, just one month before his death.  I knew that the visit took place, but had never seen any photo of it.  Nobu mentions it in his moving Eulogy for Mr. Van Cliburn by Nobuyuki Tsujii

"I am saddened by the news of the passing of  Mr. Van Cliburn.  I would like to express my condolences sincerely to the Van Cliburn Foundation and everyone involved.
I first met Mr. Cliburn in May 2009, during the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He was tall and slender; the hands that I shook I remember were warm and soft.   From the  calm elegance in the way of his speaking, I had the impression that he was a very delicate and gentle person.  Since then, he was sure to come whenever I performed in Texas.   In November 2011, he came to my recital at Carnegie Hall, and we had dinner together after the concert; he was very cheerful.
I heard about his illness and visited him at his home on February 2nd of this year.  He stood up to greet me, and talked with me for more than the scheduled 30 minutes.  Our conversation went from advice on playing techniques, to the importance of telling more people about the beauty of classical music, a very wide range of things; it was sprinkled with jokes and stories, and he was very happy.  He said that Cliburn medalists like us, in addition to striving to deepen our own musical understanding, can make a strong impression on others to attract them to classical music.  When we said goodbye, his handshake was strong, so I feel I cannot believe that he has passed away ... "

In this clip, Mr. Cliburn stands up from his wheelchair to give Nobu a hug.   According to the Japanese translation, Mr. Cliburn says, "These days people can easily listen to music on video, but it takes a person to bring them into the concert halls."

On this broadcast, Nobu names Mr. Cliburn as his predecessor/hero in whose steps he achieved his success.  Nobu says he enjoys performing everywhere.  According to the subtitles, Nobu's number of performances each year has gone from 40 to nearly 90 in 2016.  And he plans to keep on going in honor of the words of  Mr. Cliburn.
