News came this morning from the Cliburn Foundation that Nobu will return to Carnegie Hall

According to Carnegie Hall's posting,  pianist Murray Perahia, has had to withdraw "from this recital due to medical reasons. Nobuyuki Tsujii will perform in his place."

I have great respect for Murray Perahia and wish him the best.
But of course this is big news to us.
The recital is Friday, May 10, 20198 PM at the Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage.
The recital program is the same as Nobu's recitals in Paris (December 17 2018), London (Jan 30 2019), and in Berlin February 2019

Program
SATIE Trois Gymnopédies
DEBUSSY Images, Book I
RAVEL Sonatine
CHOPIN Scherzo No. 1
CHOPIN Scherzo No. 2
CHOPIN Scherzo No. 3
CHOPIN Scherzo No. 4

The recital received wide acclaim, including a 5-stars review from Michael Church of the U.K. Independent.

Ticket have been on sale for some time for Mr. Perahia's recital, but many seats are currently available, at https://www.carnegiehall.org/calendar/2019/05/10/murray-perahia-piano-0800pm

A cheap dig on Nobuyuki Tsujii on the 'Slipped Disc' blog

I half expected this.  In fact, soon after reading the announcement of Nobu stepping in for Murray Perahia  on May 10,  I checked the "Slipped Disc" blog, a tabloid style website on (mostly) classical music by U.K. music writer Norman Lebrecht, which regularly features postings on deaths and illnesses of performing artists.

Sure enough, this morning a piece showed up:  Murray Perahia suffers ‘sudden medical setback’, which you can see in full in this image below:

And, for the benefit of the visually impaired,  here is the text:
Murray Perahia suffers ‘sudden medical setback’
     By norman lebrecht
    on March 27, 2019
The pianist has cancelled a North America tour.
Here’s the statement from his management: ‘It is with great regret that Mr. Perahia has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming solo recitals in North America as a sudden medical setback has prevented him from performing publicly.’

Peter Serkin will step in for some dates. Kirill Gerstein will cover his date at the Gilmore in Kalamazoo. The sought-after Víkingur Ólafsson will replace him in LA.

Then, under a photo of Mr. Perahia, a jab on Nobu
Carnegie Hall has replaced him with, er, Nobuyuki Tsujii.
Money back?

Of course I immediately saw red and sent off a comment, as follows:
First, I have great respect for Mr.  Perahia and I wish him well.
>Carnegie Hall has replaced him with, er, Nobuyuki Tsujii.
>Money back?
I expected some snide reaction to this announcement from some, but it is still disappointing to see it here.
As a long-time American admirer of Nobuyuki Tsujii, I am compelled to object to this putdown, uncalled-for and uncivil. I have followed Tsujii's career for years, and he has slowly but surely built up his reputation outside his native Japan, where he is an indisputable classical music superstar.
At the Carnegie on May 10, on short notice,Tsujii will perform the same recital as he did in Paris (December), London (QEB Hall, Jan 30; I was there) and Germany (February), receiving acclaims.  Michael Church of the U.K. Independent gave him a 5-star review https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/classical/reviews/nobuyuki-tsujii-pianist-southbank-review-chopin-satie-tour-tickets-a8756316.html
Mr. Tsujii has a heavy schedule in upcoming months, and will be making this performance amid a schedule that already called for traveling to Moscow, Hong Kong, Taiwan, France, Germany and St. Petersburg.

Nobu always has an uphill battle with some critics and some music writers.  I have gotten used to it.  We know better, and so should Mr. Lebrecht.

A while back I reported that Nobu will appear, once again, in this years White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg.  Today, I noticed a March 25 Announcement from the Mariinsky Theatre.
Below is an image of the announcement, in Russian, of course, and the text cannot be copied and pasted.
Below is a translation of the opening paragraph:

Here is the "playbill" for Nobu's recital
Nobu's recital is scheduled for May 31 Friday at 20:00, at the Mariinsky Theatre concert Hall in St. Petersburg.  The concert program is the same as for his just-announced May 10 Carnegie Hall recital:

Today I came upon a posting of the upcoming concert schedule of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris => https://www.offi.fr/concerts/theatre-des-champs-elysees-1756.html

PHOTO ABOVE: Nobu on stage at his 2018 recital in the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées

Look who's on it and what's on the program -

In English, in says
"Tuesday 14 January 20:00
Piano recital by Nobuyuki Tsujii.  Program: Schubert Impromptus op.90, Scriabin sonata no. 5 op. 53, Chopin 4 ballades"

Nobu has performed recitals at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées twice (October 23 2017&December 17 2018), and they were big successes, especially the last one which took place just before Christmas.  In online comments, many concert goers expressed their wishes for Nobu to be brought back for more.  I wrote tp the recital's producers to relay to them the audience's sentiment,  and received a warm reply from Monsieur Michel Mollard: "Of course we will bring Nobuyuki back."  Looks like he made good on his word!

This is the first known 2020 performance of Nobu.   And now we also know what to expect to be on Nobu's next new recital program!
The Schubert and the Scriabin are new to Nobu's repertoire, although I have seen video clips of a very young Nobu playing  no. 4 (in A-flat major) of the Schubert impromptus.

Alfred Brendel - Schubert - Four Impromptus, D 899,Op 90

Yevgeny Sudbin plays Scriabin: Sonata No. 5, op. 53

Nobu has performed Chopin's 4 ballades in past recitals, and they are on his 2016 CD album 'Chopin:Etudes & Ballades'

Here is a video of Nobu playing CHOPIN Ballade No. 4.
(The aspect ratio of the video is incorrect, hence the odd shapes of Nobu's hands.)

Just announced: Our busy boy Nobu will perform BEETHOVEN's "Emperor" concerto on Oct 23, at a Beethoven Festival of the NDR Radiophilharmonie, in Hanover Germany, with conductor Andrew Manze . This performance comes just before Nobu's debut on Oct 27/28 with the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg and conductor Kent Nagano in Hamburg.
And, as a bonus, it seems Nobu (as well as the other top pianists featured) will play a mini-recital 18.45 to 19.15 before the concert!
(Please scroll down to see an English translation of the announcement NDR Radiophilharmonic presents new program.)

This is how Nobu's schedule is shaping up for a busy week in Germany this fall:
October 23Hannover Congress Centrum, Hanover, Germany
18.45 to 19.15 mini-recital at Leibniz Hall (formerly Beethoven Hall)
20:00  NDR Radio Philharmonie. With chief conductor Andrew Manze, at Kuppel Hall
October 27 & 28 Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal, Hamburg, Germany
Kent Nagano conducts Hamburg Philharmonic
Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1

"The NDR Radiophilharmonie is a German radio orchestra, affiliated with the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) in Hanover (Germany), the capital of Lower Saxony." -- wikipedia.  Mo. Andrew Manze is the orchestra's current chief conductor (since 2014). It is not to be confused with the NDR Elbphlharmonie Orchestra, currently under conductor Alan Gilbert.

***
The announcement (translated from German):
NDR Radiophilharmonic presents new program
Extraordinary programs as well as innovations mark the sixth year of successful cooperation between British conductor Andrew Manze and the NDR Radio Philharmonic. At a press conference on Friday, April 5th, Achim Dobschall, Head of Orchestra, Choir and Concerts at NDR, Matthias Ilkenhans, Manager of NDR Radio Philharmonic, and Andrew Manze presented the 2019/2020 season . Advance ticket sales will start on Wednesday, April 10th.

The orchestra sets special accents in the 2019/2020 season right off the bat with the monumental Third Symphony by Gustav Mahler and in autumn with the Beethoven Festival . The audience can look forward to many international artists: Martha Argerich , Anne Sofie von Otter , Pierre-Laurent Aimard , Thomas Zehetmair , Rafael Payare , Xavier de Maistre and Brad Mehldau . Tours take the NDR Radio Philharmonic to China and Poland.
...
Beethoven Festival
2020 is the year of Ludwig van Beethoven. In the eyes of Andrew Manze, the music of Beethoven by NDR Radio Philharmonic is particularly good, "It is a genune Beethoven orchestra". The orchestra therefore celebrates its 250th anniversary with its own Beethoven Festival , in which all symphonies and piano concertos will be be heard. Between October 20 and November 10, 2019, the orchestra will present these works under the direction of Chief Conductor Andrew Manze, featuring five top pianists: Pierre-Laurent Aimard , Martin Helmchen , Martin Stadtfeld , Nobuyuki Tsujii and Lars Vogt . The celebrations will take place in January 2020 as part of the ARD Week "
...
And on a linked page for the Beethoven-Festival in Kuppel Hall , there is this paragraph:
Die Pianisten der Klavierkonzerte - Nobuyuki Tsujii, Martin Stadtfeld, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Lars Vogt und Martin Helmchen - laden jeweils vor ihren Auftritten von 18.45 bis 19.15 Uhr in den Leibniz Saal zu einem besonderen Event ein: ein Klavier-Rezital als Carte blanche, ganz nach eigenem Gusto gestaltet. Lassen Sie sich überraschen!
[The pianists of the piano concertos - Nobuyuki Tsujii, Martin Stadtfeld, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Lars Vogt and Martin Helmchen - Everybody will be invited to a special event in the Leibniz Saal from 18.45 to 19.15 before their performances: a piano recital as Carte blanche, designed according to each's own taste.Let yourself be surprised!]
So it sounds like each pianist will play a mini-recital in a small hall before his concerto performance with the orchestra!

On April 7, apparent a day after he returned from U.S. to rehearse with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Nobu showed up on stage a a "secret guest" of singer-performer Sarah Àlainn  at her "Timeless Tour"finale concert.  The audience were completely taken by surprise.  Judging from web postings, the co-performance was a huge success.
This page collects the news, comments and the many great photos about the happy event, as it unfolded.

♪ April 7 Surprise appearance at a Sarah Àlainn サラ・オレイン concert
Lest we think that Nobu is frantically learning the numerous new works for his upcoming concerts, he apparently has time for other things.
People who were at a sold-out concert last night in Tokyo by Australia-born singer/violinist/performer Sarah Àlainn サラ・オレイン were treated to a surprise appearance of Nobu on stage.
The two reportedly performed (he on piano, she sang) renditions of the たんぽぽの歌 "Dandelion Song" and Caccini (Vovilov)'s Ave Maria
Apparently the concert goers were told that there would be a "secret guest", but Nobu's appearance was a big surprise.
No photos of the performance have come up, but here is one of Nobu & the singer 'Sara' appearing together at a 2018 Japan-Australia state dinner, perhaps the first time that they met.

April 7 I went to the Opera City Concert Hall for Sarah Àlainn's tour concert. The secret guest was the pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii . Mr. Tsujii played the dandelion song that he composed and Caccini's Ave Maria, and played it with Sara singing. Mr. Tsujii's performance was amazing. Sarah's singing was great too Here is a YouTube video of Caccini's Ave Maria, soprano with piano accompaniment.
The Dandelion song I don't believe is actually Nobu's composition, but perhaps his rendition of a Japanese children's song Here is a YouTube  video of the song  => https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWA2eZ8OubA
UPDATE: It turns out that the 'Dandelion song' is actually Nobu's rendition of David Foster's 'Jeanie with the light brown hair', which somehow has taken on  the name 'The Dandelion Sng' in Japan.

Sarah's Concert was wonderful anyway, what with the costume changes, matching hairstyles, violin performance, drums, bicycle debut, song selection, and on-stage video.
However, there was more surprise being prepared. A special guest, Nobuyuki Tsujii, would appear! ! Is there such a wonderful thing? ! I was really overwhelmed. Another concert announcement just discovered -- Nobu makes his Norway debut Friday January 17 19:00 at the Oslo Konserthus.
He will perform Beethoven's 'Emperor' Concerto with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Conductor Vasily Petrenko.

Also on the concert program is Richard Strauss' Ein Heldenleben.

It is so great that Nobu makes his debut in Norway, and it makes me extra happy that he is invited to perform with Mo. Petrenko again. They are good together.  It seems a long time ago, but in fact it was just last year (2018) that they performed quite a bit, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and we were treated to live streaming of their performances!  Their performance of Grieg's Concerto can still be watched here.

Year 2020 is Beethoven's 250th birthday-- Nobu plays 'Emperor' with Kent Nagano and the Hamburg Phil in fall 2019, and now with Petrenko and the Oslo Phil in 2020.  Perhaps there will be more Beethoven performances to come.  Then there is the Tokyo Olympic 2020 ... what a year it will be!

TO BE CONTINUED.

This is a meeting without seeing, but full of laughter and music.Japanese completely-blind pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii came to the Taichung Huiming School for the Blind and met with the students today to share his own musical experience. A curious student asked if he had ever struck the wrong note when playing the piano. Tsujii said with a smile: "Of course. But knowing that someone listening to my concert is very happy, I will not become nervous; I don't think of playing the wrong sound."

First-prize winner of the 2009 US Van Cliburn Piano Competition, the visually impaired Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, nicknamed NOBU by fans, was invited by TSMC Culture and Education Foundation. Today, he went to Taichung's Huimin Private School for the Blind to hold a meeting.  NOBUshared his own life struggles and experience with the school's teachers and students, and encouraged visually-impaired students to realize their potentials.

At the invitation of the annual art festival held by the TSMC Culture and Education Foundation, Tai Chi Heart Art Festival, NOBU performed at the Taichung National Opera yesterday, and today went to Huiming School to meet with the blind students.

NOBU walked to the piano with the guidance of others, and his head swayed with the music when playing.  Enraptured, the guests, teachers and students of Huiming, listened in attention. When the performance was over, the excited blind students asked him questions, such as how to adjust with and overcome psychological problems before a performance.  He replied that he likes to play.  He plays in a relaxed and happy mood so that the audience can listen to the music at ease.  He would practice seriously the day before each performance, but on other days he does what he enjoys, such as eating food and chatting with friends.

A blind student asked if he ever hits the wrong note, NOBU said, of course there are occasions when he strikes the wrong keys, but as long as you think that others are happy to listen to his performance, even with the wrong sound, you can reduce the tension. A child asked him if playing the piano makes him happy. He replied: "Of course it makes me happy, I sense that everyone listening to the music is happy, and that makes me very happy."

Xu Junlang, CEO of the TSMC Culture and Education Foundation, said that the 17th annual Tai Chi Heart Art Festival has grown this year. The seeds of art are gradually spreading. This year they were able to invite the visually impaired Japanese pianist, who won the international piano competition 20 years ago [editorial: 10 years ago, actually] to meet with the blind students, talk about his own struggles, and to inspire the learning and motivation of the blind students.

"Nobuyuki Tsujii and a blind student formed an impromptu ensemble"

-- photo by 陳淑娥 Chen Shuzhen China Timeshttps://www.chinatimes.com/newspapers/20190416000718-260115?chdtv

The TSMC Culture and Education Foundation specially invited the Japanese visually impaired pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii (nicknamed NOBU) to perform at the Taichung Huiming Blind School on the 15th. NOBU shared his story of struggles with the blind school teachers and students, and encouraged the students to develop their potential and make more dreams. The born-blind pianist formed an impromptu ensemble with a student violinist. The scene won thunderous applause, and NOBU smiled brilliantly.

TSMC cares about visually impaired education

Xu Junlang, CEO of the TSMC Culture and Education Foundation, said that the "Taiwan Heart Art Festival" has entered its 17th year and has spread the seeds of art to all corners for a long time. This year, for the first time, visually impaired artists are invited to participate in the art season to promote "a meeting without seeing." I hope that more people will hear about the Huiming school and raise their concern for visually impaired education.

NOBU's wonderful performance kicked off the event. The melodious music intoxicated the guests and teachers. Blind student Lu Wengui proposed the impromptu ensemble request. NOBU said nothing, but agreed to do so quickly. The 2 people showed full tacit understanding, on the piano and violin. [They played Brahm's  Lullaby.] At the end of the performance, a thunderous applause, which made the blind students full of emotion.

Feel the natural inspiration

NOBU also shared his own journey with the children. He said that in order to present a perfect performance, he worked hard for 7 to 8 hours before playing a concert. He would do his favorite things the day before, such as eating delicious food, chatting with someone, and relaxing. He likes to play the piano in front of everyone and sensing the happiness of everyone in the audience makes him happy.

NOBU said try to keep your mood happy, adjust your mentality to keep yourself from being nervous, and you can perform on your own. When achild asked, "Are you happy playing the piano? I do."" NOBU immediately said, "I am also very happy!" NOBU also composes songs; he said that he would come to the open air or the forest to feel the charm of nature, and the inspiration would come. A melody would form in the brain, and then he would fix a subject.

At age 30, the visually impaired pianist Tsujii, who is nicknamed NOBU by fans, was completely blind at birth. His mother was a media announcer and his father is a gynaecologist. God took his eyes and gave him an amazing voice! At the age of one and a half, he [played on a toy piano] , substituting his hearing for sight. Seeing the world with his "heart", he won first prize at a 2009 the Cliburn Piano Competition.

The TSMC Culture and Education Foundation pointed out that the "Taiwan Heart Art Festival" specially invited NOBU. On the 14th, the Taichung National Opera and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra came to Taiwan for the first time to perform "Miracle! Listen to NOBU" concert. For Nobu, When the first prize is over 10 years, it has a different meaning. An accompanying photo shows the audience as they listened to Nobu.

Talking about the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra by Yan Zexun

2019/4/17 — 18:28

Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii was a guest at the Hong Kong University last week (April 13) with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, which has been actively making a big impact in the recording market in recent years. They performed Chopin’s Piano Concerto no. 2. The media was extremely pleased to use the label of "Blind Pianist" to promote public interest, and to convey some sympathy to Tsujii. He doesn’t need it. Thanks to his unusual sensitivity, he performed a very nuanced Chopin work, which is really more than enough. To be honest, many pianists with perfect eyesight, who can see the 88 keys every minute and every second, do not demonstrate nearly as much musical sense as him. I would say there are absolutely no lack of virtuosos who can make interpretations; there are also many artists who don’t deviate from the original intentions and ideas. But when it comes to appeal, no lie, you have to listen to Tsujii.

However, my readers know that I prefer to focus on the less popular, the ones who can't afford the magnifying light. Well, since the spotlights of the media have been shining on the body of Tsujii, I will turn my attention to talk about the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, who gave me much joy ….

[The rest of the article, in  Chinese, follows below.  The writer goes into the history, the conductor-less approach and the many accomplishments of the Orpheus.  My limited  translation ability would not do justice to the narrative -- I leave that to the professional translators for the Orpheus ^_^]

Nobuyuki Tsujii's Theme Music for TV Show 'Giants of Beauty'

On April 4 2015, long-running Tokyo TV program「美の巨人たち "Giant of Beauty"("The Great Masters of Art"), a show about masterpieces in arts, celebrated its 16th anniversary by unveiling a new theme music.

The composer of the new music? None other than our beloved Nobuyuki Tsujii, who has said that his father is a big fan of the show.  There is an opening theme: bubbly and exuberant, a favorite of mine, and a more mellow ending theme.  I received a video clip of the music as it was played for the first time on the show, now viewable on YouTube -- also seen below.

Nobu is justifiably proud of this music.  He performed it at numerous concerts in Japan, including his  2015 "Home Brew & Rhapsody in Blue" Japan tour, a "Giants of Beauty" concert held in Tokyo on December 8 2015, and his 2017 "Music and Painting" Concert Tour.  The music is also recorded as two tracks on Disc 2 of his 2017 "Debut 10 Years" Commemoration CD Album, an "Amazon's Choice" CD to this day.

You can also hear the bubbly theme music at the end of this video of a full episode of the show (about Leonardo de Vinci) aired in 2018 => https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R86cbfYmRBc

The longer ending theme music can be heard in this clip => https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77_D3qgOzIk.  The ending theme is quite popular with pianists in Japan, and many videos of the piece performed by other than Nobu can be found on YouTube.

Sadly, the show underwent re-modeling in April 2019, and, word came that both the narrator, Mr. Akira Kobayashi 小林薫, and Nobu's music no longer appear on its episodes.

The Giants of Beauty [Tokyo TV program] has been renewed since April; it is no longer narrated by Mr. Kobayashi, and the piano music is no longer by Nobuyuki Tsujii ... (a bit depressing)
The compositions of the show is new, and I accept that the new music in also interesting, but I will not forget the narration of Mr. Akira Kobayashi nor the piano of Nobuyuki Tsujii
I posted this in response: "In English there is a saying: 'All good things must come to an end.' Life goes on. It will be okay. "  As the song says: "Don't it always seem to go. That you don't know what you've got. Till it's gone." (Joni Mitchell)

I too will not forget the "Beauty of Giants" music that Nobu composed in 2015, mostly likely as a tribute to his beloved father, Mr. Takashi Tsujii.

Nobuyuki Tsujii made his debut in Hong Kong on April 13, in a concert where he performed Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

Hong Kong is my birthplace.  I left it at an early age, when the place was still under British rule.  After decades of living in the U.S., I have to admit that I remember very little of it.  Then too, the place has undergone tremendous political and social changes in the interim.  The last time I went back, several years ago, I was a stranger in my homeland.

It came as a surprise to me that Nobu is not an unknown in Hong Kong, judging from some of the web postings in the wake of Nobu's debut concert there, such as this blog post that showed up just now. It seems unreal to read an article about Nobu written in my first language.  Ironically, I found it difficult to comprehend the text -- written in the Hong Kong dialect of Chinese, with which Google Translate is not at its best.  Below is the fruit of my best effort of making a translation -- I think I got it mostly right.

Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii  -- Earth-shaking Teacher

Citizen News, April 21 2019
On April 13, Japanese superstar blind pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii made a single performance at Hong Kong University.  Tickets had sold out quickly.  After viewing him on youtube hundreds and thousands of times, this time he appeared right in front of my eyes.
All around me I heard Japanese; I estimate about one-fourth of the audience were Japanaese.

Photo caption: Nobuyuki Tsujii plays Chopin encore at his Hong Kong University concert.
[The photo was taken from an audience's seat.  The orchestra and Nobu are seen on stage, at the end of the Chopin 2 performance.  Nobu has one hand on the piano, in the midst of  his Japanese bowing, as the orchestra members look on.]

When I heard him play Chopin and Rachmaninoff for the first time, I was shocked. In the second concerto of Chopin, the second movement is super difficult.   It is not easy for a sightless person to play early concertos such as Mozart's, and the Chopin Piano Concertos should be an impossible task.
This time the concerto is the second of Chopin.  A few years back at the Chopin Piano Competition, most of the contestants were playing concerto no 1.   In fact, the second concerto is more difficult to play.

The Orpheus, a chamber orchestra of more than 20 people, has no conductor.  The volume is deep; the violin is especially good, comparable to a normal orchestra of 80 people. Haha [snicker], this would make it harder for conductors to make a living in the future.  It is unimaginable how an undirected band, with a sightless pianist, can play Chopin with such beauty.

Tsujii has gotten very busy lately, and, after his stop in Hong Kong, he flew to Taipei, and then returned to Osaka.  [Editorial: Nobu's home town is Tokyo, not Osaka.] You cannot see his Hong Kong version of Chopin II on Youtube. It's better to listen to his  Rachmaninov 2 at the Proms Festival in the UK. It is his classic.

[A video of the BBC Proms performance is embedded with the article.]

And this makes it two -- It is  music that all human beings must listen to!

It hails from "ALL ARTS", which I never heard of.
"Blind since birth, pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii believes “there are no barriers in the field of music.” Watch him play for the first time with @ValeryGergiev at @mariinskyen in tonight's #BigEvent: 8 p.m. Saturday Streaming Now."
And it comes with a video trailer of the Nobuyuki Tusjii at White Nights video (2011), which has been around for years and has been shown worldwide.

The Nobuyuki Tusjii at White Nights video includes a performance by Nobu of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 at his St. Petersburg debug in year 2012.  The conductor is Valery Gergiev and the orchestra is the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra.  The DVD has been around for years and it is available on Amazon , etc.. I own a copy; it is of excellent quality.

Upon investigation, it seems ALL ARTS is a new endeavor by New York public media organization WNET: "ALL ARTS is an unprecedented new broadcast channel, streaming platform and website dedicated to arts and culture 24/7. Programming is available on our website; Facebook; Twitter; Instagram; streaming apps on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV; and broadcast and cable channels in the greater New York area."

Sounds like a good thing that should be applauded and supported!

Another cheap dig on Nobu

$

Some time back in Marchnews came that veteran pianist Murray Perahia canceled his U.S. recital tour for medical reason, and Nobu was tapped to step in for the recital of Mr. Perahia on May 10 at the Carnegie Hall.

The very next day, U.K. music writer Norman Lebrecht made a post about the announcement on his 'Slipped Disc' blog, and could not refrain from making a jab on Nobu -- see the last line.

Carnegie Hall has replaced him with, er, Nobuyuki Tsujii.
Money back?

I fired off a responseto wish Mr. Perahia well and to voice my displeasure about the jab.  The comment received 10 thumbs-up.  And I thought that was the end of that.

But today my blood pressure shot up when I read this line by writer Mark Swed, in a piece on the  recital of Víkingur Ólafsson in Los Angeles (substituting for Mr. Perahi), this is written
When Murray Perahia canceled his U.S. recital tour this spring due to an otherwise unexplained “sudden medical setback,” presenters were stuck with the seeming impossible. How to replace a piano legend? Among the excellent artistic choices were Peter Serkin and Kirill Gerstein. Carnegie went commercial with Nobuyuki Tsujii. Some venues understandably threw up their hands and gave ticket buyers their money back.
(He went on to give Mr. Ólafsson a mixed review.)

I happen to be a subscriber of the Los Angles Times, but  I have long stopped reading reviews of Mr. Swed, after tiring of his relentless cheer-leading for the L.A. Phil, conductor Gustavo Dudamel and pianist Yuja Wang.  (I came upon his review today because it showed up on Google when I did my daily news search on Nobu. )

Coming from this reviewer, it truly infuriates me for him to say "Carnegie went commercial with Nobuyuki Tsujii."  Commercial???  Does this man know the unimaginable effort that Nobu goes through to get where he is?   Commercial is what I call said female pianist who wears underwear that passes for costume on stage, sullying classical music to attract eyeballs.

I repeat what I wrote to Mr. Lebrecht back in March:
Petersburg.

And, I say this again:
Nobu always has an uphill battle with some critics and some music writers.  I have gotten used to it.  We know better, and so should Mr. Lebrecht and now Mr. Swed.  But I don't expect they ever will.

"Nobuyuki Tsujii has small hands" -- NOT!

"Tsujii’s hands are small, but he managed the giant fistfuls of notes with nonchalant ease..." -- Michael Church , the U.K. Independent, January 31 2019

Image:  a photo of Nobu's hands on the keyboard, posted in 2013 by the BBC Philharmonics,

In"Nobuyuki Tsujii at the Southbank Centre, London, review: An extraordinary performance by any standards", long-time writer Michael Church of the U.K. Independent wrote:
Tsujii’s hands are small, but he managed the giant fistfuls of notes with nonchalant ease, whipping up the audience into a frenzy of excitement.

It is a great review for Nobu: 5 stars and full of superlatives, for which this Nobu fan is eternally grateful.  But I did take Mr. Church to task for his careless remark that "90% of the audience [at the Jan 30 Southbank Queen Elizabeth Hall recital] was Japanese."
Carolyn, reader of my blog post, on the other hand, took issue with his assertion about Nobu's hand size:
"Nobuyuki Tsujii's hands are NOT small; he has beautiful hands with long fingers. I have never seen such beautiful hands nor such dexterous ones. He successfully accomplishes all of his performances with these hands. There is none other like him and we are fortunate to be alive to witness him. He is truly special."

I have shaken Nobu's hands many times.  But, not knowing about other pianist's hands, I could not opine on whether Nobu's hands are small compared to others.  I did think (as perhaps did Mr. Church) that, as an Asian, Nobu's hands are smaller than say European hands.

Today, I came upona tweet posted by musician pianist 瀬川玄 Gen Sagawa.  Below you will find an image of his tweet, which -- judging from the 'like' and 'retweet' counts, has received some attention.

In English, it reads:
A list of pianist hand sizes
Reiko Nakamura 8 degrees
Ashkenazy 8 degrees
Barenboim 9 degrees
Horowitz 10 degrees
Marc-André Hamelin  11 degrees
Nobuyuki Tsujii 11 degrees
Richter 12 degrees
Rubinstein ... 12 degrees
Lang Lang 12 degrees
Liszt 13 degrees
Rachmaninov 13 degrees

In response to inquiries, the tweeter wrote that the data is based on "videos and oversea interviews"; and he wrote that the accuracy cannot be verified, and maybe "one degree off either way" in each case.

No one asked about the metric of the measurement, nor did any of those who responded to the post question the data for Nobu and others. (Several did question the '8 degree' ascribed to Ashkenazy, pointing out that Ashkenazy himself has said [in interviews] that his hands are of average size.)

I did a search on the web. It turns out the hand size/span is a popular topic in  pianist circle.  Among the many articles that came up is one posted in 2016 by U.K.'s Classic FM, titled  "Just how massive was Rachmaninov's hand-span?"
How far could the great pianists stretch their hands? We take a look at just how big the hands of the star virtuosos were, from Rachmaninov to Liszt and Barenboim to Lang Lang.
Did you know that Daniel Barenboim, one of his generation's most respected pianists, can manage to straddle a 9th on the piano, where the likes of Rachmaninov and Liszt could handle a whopping 13th?
And an "infograph" is then presented to illustrate the point.

In the infograph, images of 6 detached hands -- labeled Scriabin (8), Dame Myra Hess (9), Barenboim (9), Lang Lang (12), Liszt (13) and Rachmaninov (13) respectively -- are superimposed on the keyboard of a grand piano. The numbers shown with some names match the data cited in Pianist Sagawa's tweet, so I suspect that this article is the genesis of the data posted by Sagawa-san.

If that is indeed the case, then the number cited with each pianist refers to the count of keys that the pianist's hand, stretched, can cover: 8 for Scriabin, 13 for Liszt and Rachmaninov, and so forth.

It does not seem far-fetched that by looking at videos of Nobu's performances, a knowledgeable and astute person may arrive at the conclusion that Nobu's hands can cover a stretch of 11 keys, as cited in the tweet of pianist Sagawa. And, if the numbers in the tweet are to be believed, then Carolyn is right: Nobu's hands are not small at all -- his stretch is greater than Ashenazy, Barenboim and Horowitz!

But let's do keep in mind that the twitter's report is unverified, and hence to be taken with a large grain of salt. Besides, as Sagawa-san himself acknowledged, in response to inquiries: "The distance between fingers and the flexibility of the fingers are also important factors in piano playing."

In the article Nobu' Fever: Japan Falls for a Blind Piano Prodigy, (Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009 Time Magazine, writer Yuki Oda wrote
"The round-faced, stout Tokyoite — he says he takes after his dad, except for the fingers."

And, in this photo below of the Tsujii family, Nobu's dad proudly shows off the large hand of his son.  It is as if, defying the law of nature, Nobu somehow willed himself to develop the large hands for him to become a world-class pianist.

Nobu & the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg May 2019

Next month (May 2019), Nobu joins the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg and conductor Marco Letonja for their 2018-19 season closing concerts, playing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto no. 1 in 3 performances:

Ticket sales for the Strasbourg concerts cannot be viewed online, but the Cologne concert appears to have PLENTY of unclaimed seats. Interestingly, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, perform with pianist Jan Lisiecki in this hall one day before, and ticket sales for that concert looks to be roughly equal.

The Kölner Philharmonieis an unusual concert hall.   I stopped in Cologne in 2014 when Nobu made one of his earlier Germany tour. Although I did not attend a concert there, I walked on top of the venue. The concert hall is an underground amphitheatre, located below a busy public square that has to be closed during performances to avoid disturbances from foot-traffic noises.
